D: That's a good idea. Your parents don't need to know.
T: I don't want to lie to them though.
A: Come on, Tom. Just one hour at the Internat café won't really affect your grades. Why do you have to tell them?
D: And we can go study at my house after we play. So you won't really be lying. You'll just be…twisting the truth a little.
T: Hmm. I don't know… that sounds like lying to me.
A: Tom, don't be sucj a goody-goody. It's just a little white lie. No big deal.
T: I guess you're right. My parents don't need to know OK, let's go!
D: Yeah, come with us, Tom. You don't have to tell your parents everything you do.
A: Yeah.What they don't know won't hurt them.
T: No, I shouldn't. I'm not going to lie.
A: I know you're dying to play this game. Just come with us. Study afterward.
T: You're right; I do really want to play this game. But I don't want to lose my parents' trust.
D: Relax, Tom. Don't take everything so seriously.
A: Tell your conscuence to take a break. Let's go!
T: Sorry, guys, you'll just have to go without me. I'm going home to study. I'll play the game when my grades get bettter.
T: It's tempting. But my parents might find out, and then I'll be in trouble.
A: Oh, they'll never know.
T: Maybe, but I don't want to risk it.
D: Well, what if we don't go to the Internet café? We could go to Alan's house and play games on his computer.
T: No.
D: Why not? Your parents didn't say you couldn't go to Alan's house. They just said you couldn't go to the Internet cafés.
T: But you know what they meant- they want me to study, not play games.
D: Maybe. But if we play at Alan's house, then techcically, you're not disobeying them.
T: Well, that's true. OK. Let's go.

Receptionist 1: English Language Center. How may I help you?
Caller: Yes. I'm calling to find out more information about your program. For example, what kind of courses do you offer?
Receptionist 1: Well, first of all, the purpose of our program is to provide language learning opportunities to this area's community [Uh-hum], whether a student's goal is to master basic functional language skills, let's say, for his or her job, or to study intensively to enter a US college or university.
Caller: Okay. I'm calling for a friend who is interested in attending a US university.
Receptionist 1: And that's the kind of, uh, instruction that we provide, from basic communication courses to content-based classes such as computer literacy, intercultural communication, and business English.
Caller: Great. What are your application deadlines for the next semester?
Receptionist 1: Well, we ask applicants to apply no later than two months before the semester begins. [Uh-hum] This gives us time to process the application and issue the student's I-20.
Caller: An I-20?
Receptionist 1: Oh, an I-20 is a form that indicates that we are giving permission for the student to study in our program, and then the student takes this form to the US embassy in his or her home country to apply for the F-1 student visa.
Caller: Alright. Thanks for your help.
Receptionist 1: If you have any questions, welcome to call back again.

Receptionist 2: English Language Center. How may I help you?
Caller: Yes. I called last week and I really interest in your program. I need more information about it.
Receptionist 2: Sure. What kinds of information do you what to know?
Caller: Uh… What is the tuition for a full-time student?
Receptionist 2: It's two thousand thirty dollars.
Caller: And how does one apply?
Receptionist 2: Well, we can send you an application and you can mail it back to us, or you can fill out our application that's on our Web site.
Caller: And are there other materials I would need to send in addition to the application form?
Receptionist 2: Uh, yes. You would need to send in a $35 non-refundable application fee [Uh-huh], a sponsorship form indicating who will be responsible financially for the student while studying in our program, and a bank statement showing that you or your sponsor has sufficient funds to cover tuition expenses and living costs for the entire year of study.
Caller: And how can I send these materials to you?
Receptionist 2: You can either send the application packet by regular mail or you can fax it.
Caller: And the application fee?
Receptionist 2: We accept money orders, travelers checks, or credit cards.
Caller: Alright. I think that's about it.
Receptionist 2: Okay great.
Caller: Oh and what is your name?
Receptionist 2: Ok. My name is Angel. You can just call and ask for me.
Caller: Great. Thank you for help.
Receptionist 2: No problem and please don't hesitate to call again if you have any other questions.
Caller: Okay. Goodbye.

Jean, and Fiona

Fiona: Hi, Jean.
Jean: Hi, Fiona! What’s wrong? You look sad.
Fiona: I am. I have to give away my pet.
Jean: You own a pet, Fiona? I didn’t know that.
Fiona: Well, I’ve only had Fur Ball for a couple of days. But I can’t keep her.
Jean: Why not?
Fiona: I’m allergic to her.
Jean: Is Fur Ball a puppy?
Fiona: No, she’s a stray kitten. I found her outside The Bookshelf.
Jean: Oh, Fiona. I’m sorry.
Fiona: Me, too. I want to keep her. But I can’t live with itchy eyes and a runny nose.
Jean: Who will you give Fur Ball to?
Fiona: I don’t know. I want to find a good owner for her.
Jean: I know a great owner! Jenna! She loves cats!
Fiona: No. Jenna’s father is allergic to cats.
Jean: Oh. I’ve got it! Zack can take her.
Fiona: Zack said he doesn’t have time for a pet right now.
Jean: I know someone! Eve can take her!
Fiona: Thanks! I’ll call her!
Fiona: That’s OK, Eve. Thanks, anyway. Bye
Jean: Eve can’t take her?
Fiona: No. What if I can’t find someone to take her?
Jean: Maybe you can give her to an animal shelter.
Fiona: No! They might give her to a bad owner. I want a kind person to take her.
Jean: Fiona, I would like to take her!
Fiona: You!? Are you sure you want a pet?
Jean: When I was younger, I had many pets. I had a dog, two hamsters, and a turtle.
Fiona: Really!? This is perfect! If you take Fur Ball, I can still see her sometimes.
Jean: Right! You can come see her whenever you want.
Fiona: Great! I’ll go get Fur Ball right now!
Fiona: Here she is! Jean, I know you’ll love her. She’s so playful!
Jean: She’s adorable!
Fiona: I’m so happy I can still play with her sometimes.
Jean: But, Fiona, won't your allergies bother you?
Fiona: No! I have a plan! All I need are gloves and a mask!
Come on, Fur Ball!!!
